DOLE-E. Samar and LGU Guiuan partner to provide new pedicabs

BORONGAN CITY, Aug. 25 (PIA) –The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) - Eastern Samar Field Office in partnership with LGU Guiuan distributed free pedicabs to 30 members of the Guiuan Pedicab Driver Operators Association (PDOA) on August 19 at the Guiuan Plaza under the Proyektong Pangkabuhayan (Pedicab).

Through the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) which prepared the project proposal, the local government unit through Mayor Annaliza Gonzales-Kwan identified the beneficiaries  and provided a counterpart of P156, 250.00 while DOLE shelled out P 600, 000.

Before the pedicab drivers took possession of their brand new pedicabs, the LGU made sure they understand their responsibilities through a basic business skill and orientation seminar.

Speakers reminded them of the appropriate attitude towards the riding public, making sure they would mind their personal hygiene and most of all to take care of the resources given by the government.

According to one of their speakers, Aurora B. Delos Reyes, personal hygiene can spare them from diseases and will also entice the riding public to patronize their pedicabs.

Joel Tangqui-on of Brgy. Lupok, Guiuan who is the President of the PDOA thanked the government for the grant to the poorer sector of the community.

He promised to continuously remind his members to care of the pedicab units to serve them for a longer period.

Mayor Kwan, PESO Maria Rina Vertulfo, and DOLE Representative Cecil S. Alicando had one common reminder to the pedicab drivers: to take care of the pedicabs, that they were chosen as beneficiaries so that they can help their families with their basic needs.

Each pedicab is worth P20,000 and the production took place in Leyte.  The total project cost is P807, 840, said DOLE provincial head Aleksie Abellar. (nbq with ACO JNS/LGU Guiuan Media Center)
