MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL, Aug. 1 (PIA)--The Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Misamis Occidental in partnership with the Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental turned-over 4,830 complementary food packs to underweight children in the province, July 28.
The recipients were 87 underweight and severely underweight children ages 6 to 35 months old and 74 underweight and severely underweight children ages 36 to 59 months old in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged (GIDA) Areas and CAPDev municipalities, in Concepcion and Don Victoriano, and in municipalities with reported COVID-19 cases (April to May) Tudela and Jimenez.
This is the third wave of DOST-X’s COVID-19 response in the province of Misamis Occidental.
One of the complementary foods given to the children was the BIGMO Blend. It is a ready-to-cook baby food blend that can be prepared by adding boiling water and then cooked to desired consistency. It contains 130 kcal (energy) and 4 grams protein per 30 grams serving portions. It can serve as a complement to breast milk for six months old and young children.
Also, one of the turned-over complimentary food was the BIGMO Kroepeck. It is a nutritious deep-fried snack made from a blend of rice flour and monggo flour. The product is crisp and has an appealing cereal taste.
DOST and Nutrition Research Institute developed both the BIGMO Blend and the BIGMO Kroepeck to address malnutrition in the Philippines.
