CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro, Aug. 5 (PIA) -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Oriental Mindoro Provincial Office facilitated yesterday the installation of the newly installed Multi-commodity Solar Tunnel Dryer (MCSTD) at the Dry Tech Manufacturing Corp. in Brgy. Biga in this city.
Science Research Specialist II Engr. Zaldie C. Gawad said the Dry Tech Manufacturing Corporation is a new beneficiary of DOST’s Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) in the province.
DOST staff also evaluated the performance of the newly installed MCSTD in Calapan City.
The firm is engaged in the production of dried taro leaves, and this product is exported in Japan, Australia, USA, Dubai, Italy, Netherlands and Qatar and also sold in local markets and malls, such as Robinsons in Montalban, Rizal; Las Pinas; Balagtas, Bulacan; Novaliches; and Lipa City.
Taro leaves are heart-shaped, by-product of taro plant (Colocasia esculenta), grown in areas of subtropical and tropical region.

The firm Dry Tech Manufacturing Corporation sought assistance from DOST-Mimaropa to address their high production costs incurred due to excessive consumption of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) being used for their flat-bed dryers.
Through DOST’s SETUP, the firm now acquired MCSTD, which is a more environment-friendly equipment and has a drying capacity of almost 50 kilograms of fresh taro leaves per batch. The equipment can also be used to dry other commodities such as vegetables, fruits, and fish. (LTC/ZCG/DOST)
