DOT-CAR to unveil  Kalasag mural in honor of COVID-19 frontliners

BAGUIO CITY, Aug. 30(PIA) --  Tomorrow,  as the nation commemorates National Heroes Day, the Department of Tourism –Cordillera  will lead  the unveiling of  the Kalasag Mural  at the  Sunshine Park  in this city in honor of  our modern day heroes -  the country's frontliners  against  the corona virus disease 2019(COVID- 19).

A collaborative artwork of Baguio City's mural artists and volunteers ,  the Kalasag  Mural symbolizes the strength, struggles and heroic courage of the frontliners- the medical workers, uniformed personnel, public transport drivers, retail workers and service crew, media, government agencies, agricultural workers, social workers and street vendors –in    leading the fight against COVID-19.

The unveiling ceremony will kick-off with a flag-hoisting led by the Philippine National Police and   a Tribute Song to be rendered by Baguio’s songbird Ingrid Payaket.  

"Art in the Park", an art exhibit and workshop by the Pasakalye Group of Artists, will also be held in Sunshine Park in honor of frontliners through the arts.

In observance of health and safety guidelines, attendees to this event shall be by invitation only. The program  will be live-streamed at the DOT Cordilleras facebook account.

The artwork that serves as backdrop wall of the  stage at the Sunshine Park is made possible with support from DOT-CAR, the city government of Baguio, University of the Philippines - Baguio, and Davies Paints.

“Kalasag” is a piece of hardwood used as war shield and it  is fitting that it be attributed  to   COVID -19 frontliners who are the public’s shield from this pandemic that is one of the greatest battles  humanity ever had. (PIA CAR with reports from DOT-CAR)
