DOT helps promote Ilocos culture to boost tourism industry

SAN FERNANDO CITY, Aug. 25 (PIA) – “With the rich culture of the region, we have more to be proud of that can be promoted to help further boost the tourism industry,” Joseph Francisco Ortega, regional director of the Department of Tourism (DOT) in the Ilocos, said.

Sharing his insights during the Technical Working Group meeting of the Culture Subcommittee, Dir. Ortega, the youngest DOT director, said that with the enormous loss of the tourism stakeholders in this time of pandemic, opening the opportunity for locals to patronize culture and traditions can be a selling point.

He added, “This can be done by maximizing the use of digital media in the promotions which we in the DOT are working on.”

Meanwhile, the Culture Subcommittee under the Governance Sector of the Regional Development Council will conduct a virtual benchmarking of the historic Santa Maria Church in Ilocos Sur and the Paoay Church in Ilocos Norte.

Said churches in the region are among the four baroque churches in the country inscribed in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) world’s heritage sites.

The virtual benchmarking, targeted to be held in October, aims to learn from the policies and strategies of the local government units (LGUs) in their preservation and promotion of the said heritage sites.

Aside from the input of key resource persons from the said LGUs, representatives of the United Architects of the Philippines from the said provinces will likewise present on the architectural status of the said churches.

“We hope to solicit from the members of the Culture Subcommittee their assessment and come up with the recommendations to sustain the efforts in the preservation of these heritage sites,” Arnel Palabay of the National Economic Development Authority said.  (JCR/AMB/JDS/PIA La Union)
