E. Samar farmers get assistance from the Turkish government

BORONGAN CITY, Aug. 21 (PIA) -- The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) with the Department of Agriculture under the Special Areas for Agriculture Development (SAAD) delivered farm mechanization equipment to two farmers association in Eastern Samar.

On August 19, DA-8’s SAAD team and the Office of the Provincial Agricultural Services (OPAS) through Virgilio Capon delivered two (2) units rice threshers, five (5) units water pump and engine sets, five (5) grass cutters and two (2) mechanized rice reapers to the Tabi Rice Farmer Association of Balangkayan town.

The association president, Nicodemu Globio, promised to take care of the machines. Mayor Alan Contado also urged them to ensure that all members are given the chance to use the P643,000-worth equipment.

Later in the day, the same team delivered two (2) Sumo plus hand tractors, two (2) rice threshers and eight (8) units water pump and engine sets to 45 members of the San Pedro Farmers Association of Barangay San Pedro, Quinapondan.

Quinapondan, says Engr. Jaime Abit, has only 460 hectares of rice land but their average yield is 100 bags per hectare.

OPAS Chief Virgilio Capon said that it is only Dolores and Quinapondan that produce enough rice for their constituents.

He urged the farmers to use the equipment to their maximum potential to better their production.
DA-8’s Larry Sultan congratulated the farmers saying that it is only agriculture that posted a positive growth of 1.6 percent this pandemic time.

Present during the turn-over were Vice-Governor Maricar Goteesan; Govovernor Evardone's representative, Atty. Phillip Evardone; Mayor Alan Contado of Balangkayan; Mayor Rafael Asebias of Quinapondan; Vice-Mayor Leo Jasper Candido of Quinapondan; SAAD Focal Person Antonio Luceres; and other officials of the agriculture department and the members of the farmers organization.

The final part had the farmers taking turns in operating the different faming equipment. (nbq/PIA E. Samar)
