LGU-S. Leyte welcomes new batch of medical scholars

MAASIN CITY, Aug. 25 (PIA) -- The provincial government of Southern Leyte through Gov. Damian G. Mercado welcomed another batch of medical scholars during the Memorandum of Agreement signing ceremony held on August 20.

In an official Facebook Account, the governor congratulated these aspiring nurses and doctors who passed the screening for the nursing and medical scholarship program of the province.

"The medical doctors' scholarship are ongoing, while this is the first time for the nursing course," it stated.

Among the applicants, 10 qualified for the nursing scholarship program while two (2) qualified for the medical doctos' scholarship program.

The said program will defray the students' tuition fees, housing, books, transportation allowances, among others which will take effect this coming first semester of  SY 2020-2021, as   stated in the memorandum of agreement.

The province’s scholarship program was first established way back in 2015, when the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) members approved Cong. Roger Mercado and Governor Damian Mercado's long-term solution to solve the scarcity of practicing nurses and medical doctors serving at the Provincial hospital and other district hospitals run by the Provincial Government.

The province is in continuous pursuit in producing its own medical doctors and nurses, to properly render health/medical services to the people of Southern Leyte.

As of this writing, the province had already produced four full-pledged doctors, while four are waiting for the board exam which was moved due to the COVID pandemic, and another 10 undergoing their Post Graduate Intern (PGI), said Sil Toledo, Southern Leyte Medical Scholarship Coordinator.

Toledo said the province will prefer only medical schools in Cebu and Tacloban City where the scholars will study and exclusively the College of Maasin for the Nursing course. (ldl/esg/rgc/PIA-Southern Leyte)
