CALOOCAN CITY, Aug. 5 (PIA) --Manila Mayor Francisco 'Isko Moreno' Domagoso on Tuesday, announced that the local government will allow tricycles, e-trikes and pedicabs to operate during the implementation of the Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ) until August 18.

Domagoso made the announcement during his meeting with members of the Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau (MTPB) who have been designated as COVID-19 safety marshals under MECQ.

He said, only one passenger is allowed in a tricycle and that both the driver and the passsenger must wear face masks, in compliance with City Ordinance No. 8627.

"Aking pinapayagan ang lahat ng pedicab, e-trike at tricycle na mapaghanapbuhay sa panahon ng MECQ," the mayor and even recalled that he was once a pedicab driver before joining showbiz and politics.

"Mayroon lang akong pakikisuyo: tupdin natin ang panawagan ng IATF. Hangga't maaari, isang pasahero lang," he said.

Domagoso said the decision was made to help tricycle, pedicab and e-trike drivers as the COVID-19 pandemic severely affects the livelihood of thousands.

The Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Emerging Infectious Diseases had said that tricycles may operate under MECQ, subject to the guidelines set by the local government and the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

"Let me be clear about this. Para matulungan sa loob ng Maynila ang mga empleyado, lalo na ang mga medical health workers natin na magkaroon ng access sa sasakyan," the mayor said.

"Para na rin matulungan natin ang ekonomiya at maproteksyunan ang kabuhayan ng mga nahihirapan nating kababayan na silang may mapaghiramunan, mabawasan ang suliranin, at matugunan ang kanilang mga pangangailangan," he said. (PIO Manila/PIA-NCR)
