Navotas experiences reduced COVID-19 positivity rate during MECQ

CALOOCAN CITY, Aug. 18 (PIA) -- The Navotas City Government on Monday confirmed a decrease in the COVID-19 positivity rate following the reimposition of a modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) over Metro Manila earlier.

According to Mayor Toby Tiangco, in the first few days of the lockdown, the coronavirus positive rate in the city was pegged at 37 percent.

However, a week after the MECQ was imposed on Aug. 4, the rate of infection decreased by more than half to 15 percent.

“Mas bumaba po ang aming positivity rate (Our positivity rate went down),” Mayor Toby said in an interview over DZBB radio.

He emphasized that the lockdown has become “effective” based on their data.

The development also prompted Tiangco to push for the extension of the MECQ status over the National Capital Region (NCR) during a Metro Manila council on Sunday evening.

“Gusto pa namin babaan… para sana magawa namin below 10 percent, diba? Pero ang majority kagabi is GCQ [general community quarantine],” Tiangco said.

“Ang point ko naman diyan… ‘pag masyado maaga, hahabulin ng COVID ‘yung ekonomiya. Kaya tayo napilitan bumalik,” he added. (PIA NCR)
