PCG deploys K9 Units to augment security forces at LRT1

CALOOCAN CITY, Aug. 29 (PIA) -- Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commandant, Admiral George V Ursabia Jr has ordered the deployment of K9 teams to augment the implementation of stricter security measures at the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) in line with the recent terror attacks in Jolo, Sulu that led to loss of lives and damage to properties in such a time when the country continues to address the COVID-19 pandemic.

The deployment of Coast Guard K9 Teams, composed of K9 handlers, working dogs, veterinarians, and explosive ordnance disposal specialists from Roosevelt to Baclaran stations of the LRT-1, is in response to the directive of Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade for the PCG to help ensure safety and security in various public transportation hubs in Metro Manila, most especially in train stations that cater to thousands of passengers on a daily basis.

“Since August 26, our K9 teams have been assisting security forces at the LRT-1 to deter criminal activities through higher visibility, enhance response time, and to make commuter riding experience more secure. Rest assured that your Coast Guard will remain selfless and committed in protecting our riding public against the danger of terrorism,” Ursabia said.

Moreover, the Coast Guard Chief implores the riding public to cooperate with the authorities and stay vigilant during their travels at all times.

“We are also enjoining our commuters to immediately report the presence of any suspicious items, activities, or individuals at the vicinity of our train stations. Rest assured that we will immediately perform necessary actions to prevent succeeding threats to public safety and security,” Ursabia added. (PCG/PIA-NCR)
