PSA-E. Samar to conduct Census of Population and Housing in September

BORONGAN CITY, August 20 (PIA) -- The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) in Eastern Samar will conduct the 2020 Census of Population and Housing (CPH) in the province on September 1-29, 2020.

The census aims to provide government executives, policy makers, and planners with population and housing data on which to base their social and economic development plans, policies and programs.

According to Mr. Ronnie Bajado, chief statistical specialist of PSA, he will be deploying some 652 hired field census personnel wherein 29 are census area supervisors, 105 team supervisors, and 518 enumerators.

“Probably last week of August the training will be finished, and we are now ready to go for the field enumeration by September 1, 2020,” Bajado said.

The Chief Statistical Specialist disclosed that as a precautionary measure in this COVID-19 pandemic, the hired census personnel will observe health protocols during the conduct of CPH.

“The census personnel will be provided with Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) such as face masks, face shields and alcohol. They will also be provided with IDs, bags, T-shirts, vests, raincoats, umbrellas, and hats,” Bajado added.

Bajado also said that they will also observe social distancing during the face-to face interview.

“All hired census personnel involved in the 2020 CPH are required to keep in Strict Confidence any information obtained during the census that pertains to any particular household or individual person,” Bajado said.

Bajado enjoined the public to support the 2020 CPH.

Ms. Mila A. Guarino, team supervisor said that being the team supervisor she will supervise, edit and review the enumerators output in their assigned enumeration area.

As of the 2015 census of population, the province has a population of 467,000 persons. Eastern Samar is the second fastest growing province in Region-8 with an average annual population growth rate of 1.64 percent.

Maslog in E. Samar is the least populous municipality in Region 8 with 5,407 persons.  It was followed by Limasawa in Southern Leyte with 6,061 persons, and Mercedes also in E. Samar with 6,070 persons.

Eastern Samar is composed of 597 barangays with 22 municipalities and one City. Republic Act 10625, also known as the Philippine Statistical Act of 2013, which was approved on September 12, 2013, states that “the PSA shall be primarily responsible for all national censuses and surveys, sectoral statistics, consolidation of administrative recording system, and compilation of national accounts.” Specially, Section 6 (b) of this Act mandates the PSA to “prepare and conduct periodic censuses on population, housing, agriculture, fisheries, business industry, and other sectors of the economy’.
