City gov’t brings back community kitchen

ILOILO CITY, Sept. 3 (PIA) --- The Iloilo City Government has brought back the community kitchen in order to feed the affected families in barangays under lockdown due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

In a media release, City Mayor Jerry Treñas said that the city is not yet normal so they are finding ways to provide food for households under lockdown.

“We try our best to cater to the needs of the Ilonggos especially those restricted to go out of their households,” he said, adding that several villages have been put under selective or total lockdowns when cases increase in these areas.

It can be recalled that this project initiated by the city government was rolled out on March 22, a week after the city was placed under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

The community kitchens were hosted by 204 daycare centers and 37 barangay halls.

The initiative ended in June 15, 2020, after serving about 1,903,036 meals to more than 16,000 families in this city.

Meanwhile, Treñas also emphasized the vital role of the barangays in the fight against the pandemic.

“The improvement of the situation depends on the barangay officials, and that’s the secret in order to improve the barangay,” he added. (JSC/LTP/PIA6 Iloilo/Thumbnail Photo courtesy of Iloilo City Government FB Page FILE PHOTO)
