PARAÑAQUE CITY, Sept. 3 (PIA) -- Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Spokesperson Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya on Wedenesday warned anew of a latest assistance fund scam that is targeting local government unit (LGUs).
During his Laging Handa public briefing interview, Malaya said the way the scammers operate is to call local government officials claiming to be a high ranking official from the DILG Central Office and will offer government assistance provided the LGU sends them money.
“Mayroong mga tatawag sa inyo na pretending or claiming na sila ay from DILG Central Office dahil madami nga pong scam na sasabihin na sila ay makakatanggap for example, ng tulong mula sa gobyerno, or from DILG kung sila ay mag dedeposito ng ganitong amount, kung sila ay magpapadala ng ganitong pera,” Malaya warned.
“Nakakabahala nga po dahil ang dami po nung scam na ginagamit ang pangalan ng mga DILG officials, of course, kabilang po si Secretary Año at ilan pang mga senior officials, undersecretaries, and assistant secretaries ng kagawaran,” the official said.
Malaya advised all local government officials to remain vigilant and critical of these calls. He said that anyone who such calls should never believe these callers once money enters the conversation.
Malaya encouraged the LGUs to coordinate with their respective Local Government Operations Officer or the DILG Regional Office to validate any claims.
“We do not communicate with our partner local government unit through unofficial ways. Dinadaan po namin yan through the chain, through official channels. Kung may kakailanganin po kami sa inyo we will course it either through our regional director, provincial director, or local government operations officer para po makasiguro na ang kausap niyo talaga ay from DILG,” Malaya said.
