Dialysis center to bring new hope to kidney patients in Eastern Samar

BORONGAN CITY, Sept. 28 (PIA) – Dialysis patients will soon undergo their dialysis treatment at the Eastern Samar Provincial Hospital before the year ends.

This was disclosed by EPH Chief of Hospital, Dr. Jessica Sabalberino, in a presscon on Sept. 28, 2020 at the ESPH Malasakit Center.

The provincial government through the ESPH entered into an agreement with a service provider that can bring 20 dialysis machines to the government hospital.

Sabalberino said that Philhealth will sponsor the dialysis treatment and if funds are still needed, the Malasakit Center.

Presently, the doctor said that Eastern Samar has 156 dialysis patients going to Tacloban City, the nearest area that has Dialysis Clinics.

The chief of hospital said that if there will be 20 machines wih patients using the dialysis machine for four hours, the 20 machines can treat at least some 40 patients a day.

Sabalberino expressed hope that at least these Dialysis patients need not go to Tacloban City where their exposure to the virus is greater. Then they will not have to spend for food, transport and other expenses.

"I feel their burden and concern," said Sabalberino mentioning that she too had to accompany her mom, a dialysis patient two to three times a week for the treatment.

The doctor also informed the press people present that in the country, there are more Dialysis patients in the region.

She then asked the media's help to propagate proactive measures  to prevent kidney diseases.

According to Unilab, the best way is to live a healthy and active lifestyle. Avoid foods that are high in sodium and cut out excess sugar in your diet.

It also mentioned other ways to care for the kidneys such as, avoid processed food and meat, avoid soda and sugary treats, quit smoking, avoid drinking alcohol, exercise regularly, to avoid taking supplements and other medication without consulting a doctor.

Other healthy tips included drinking at least eight glasses a day and maintaining blood pressure.

Dialysis is a treatment that filters and purifies the blood using a machine. This helps keep the patient's fluids and electrolytes in balance when the kidneys cannot do their job according to  healthline. (nbq/PIA 8 E. Samar)
