DOH-9 advises on how to stay healthy during rains

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Sept 15 (PIA) – The rainy season, which causes flooding in some areas in the region, may also bring different diseases to people. This, according to Department of Health 9 (DOH 9) Medical Officer Dr. Dennis Dacayanan, who reminded the public to be extra careful during the rainy season.

The Department of Health 9 (DOH 9) is reminding residents to be extra cautious during the rainy season as it is expected to cause diseases amidst the pandemic. 

During this season, as flooding is expected, DOH 9 reminds families to prepare for any eventualities.

Dr. Dennis Dacayanan, DOH9 medical officer shared some tips to remain healthy during the rains. This includes, regularly washing hands and feet using clean water and soap especially after the feet touches the floodwater. He advised people to avoid setting foot on flood as it may be contaminated. 

He also advised to boil water before drinking if its safety is not assured. People must also be prepared with umbrellas, raincoats and boots.

It is also important to cover water containers as these may become breeding ground for dengue mosquitoes if left ajar. 

Moreover, some residences get flooded during disasters and severe weather events and occasionaly residents get stranded. That is why the “Go Bag” is important for each household where one can put important documents, food items and other necessities. DOH 9 also advises to prepare a gallon of water, which will be enough for the whole family to use, prepare medicines for flu and first aid kits, food that are easy to cook and does not spoil easily, prepare extra clothes and blanket, flashlight, whistle, and lastly, bring a portable radio to listen to news and updates.

DOH 9 also has Influenza Like Illness (ILI) surveillance to monitor and continuously advocate to prevent them. They are also encouraging the public to get flu vaccines which will also be an advantage to avoid severe illnesses. As much as possible maintain a one meter distance or more to avoid getting infected from people with ILI. The public is also advised to avoid congested and crowded areas.
