HPG collaborates with partners to better road safety in CAR

BAGUIO CITY, Sept. 30 (PIA) - - The Regional Highway Patrol Group – Cordillera, in partnership with a Regional Advocacy Council and the Road Safety Marshall Association, calls  for community cooperation in ensuring road safety, which is more of a concern than hijacking and highway robbery in the national roads  in the region.

HPG – CAR Operations Management Chief PMajor Peter Dapliyan, in a media forum here, reported that vehicular accidents or road crashes remain a concern on Cordillera highways with 919 recorded cases from January to August this year. In the same period in 2019, cases were almost double with 1,829 cases.

The travel restrictions with the implementation of community quarantine due to the Coronavirus pandemic somehow led to decrease in cases this year but the numbers are still alarming, Dapliyan said.

In efforts to address  vehicular accidents, HPG – CAR  along with the Regional Advisory Council chaired by  Carlos Rivera and the 890 -strong RSM headed by Robert Magacba will launch the "HPG Cares Luv’s U Project."

The project is more of a friendly vehicle- road safety measure entailing random check-up of vehicles to ensure everybody’s safety.

It  involves  the strict implementation of road regulations and  10-point inspection for roadworthiness that include    checking of headlights, tail lights, break/reverse, left and right signal and hazard lights, gauges, door handles and locks; horn, mirrors, wipers and washers, tires and spare wheel nuts, and basic tools and early warning devices,  Program Director Mark Ingram said.

The HPG-CAR conducted a test run in August 26 randomly testing 109 vehicles. According to Ingram, a retired British military officer who volunteers with the HPG for the project, most common findings include worn out tires, lack of brake light, tools and early warning devices.

HPG – CAR Regional Chief PLTCOL Joe Wilson Denamarca calls on public especially the motorists to cooperate in ensuring road safety to minimize vehicular accidents that not only damage motor vehicles but also lead to injuries and loss of lives.

He assured that in partnership with the Regional Advisory Council, the Road Safety marshalls and the communities, more programs and partnership will be initiated to ensure safer highways and better public awareness on road safety in Cordillera even as the region’s terrain remains a concern for drivers.

Meanwhile, HPG – CAR is also helping in efforts to fight the COVID-19 pandemic with its unit in each of the provinces in the region providing assistance through the establishment and maintenance of dedicated control points in provincial boundaries, enforcement of curfew and marshalling of public utility vehicles, Denamarca said.
