LTFRB to fully implement Beep cards by October 1

QUEZON CITY, Sept. 30 (PIA) – The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) will fully implement the cashless transaction system using Beep cards on Public Utility Buses (PUBs) of the EDSA Busway System starting Thursday, October 1, 2020.

The LTFRB is urging EDSA Busway passengers to purchase their Beep cards and to load cash into the cards to avoid inconveniences in payment once the automated fare collection system is implemented.

“We are envisioning that even more public transport vehicles adopt digital transactions means, either through QR codes, online payments or tying up with cashless payment providers such as Beep,” LTFRB Chairman Martin Delgra said.

‘Beep cards’ are stored-value contactless cards that provide an easier, modern and more convenient way of paying for the ride. The fare is deducted from the card when it is tapped at the fare collection machine. The DOTr said that this system is also being used in Metro Manila’s three elevated railways, namely: the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1), Light Rail Transit Authority 2 (LRT-2) and Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) and by a number of Point-to-Point buses and modern PUVs nationwide.

DOTr’s Assistant Secretary Steve Pastor said that this is an essential safety measure to reduce the spread of the virus associated with the handling of cash in public transport (VQR/PIA-IDPD with DOTr).
