Davao Region CWC focused against children sexual abuse

DAVAO DEL NORTE, Oct. 21 (PIA) – The Davao Region Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) is focused on protecting the rights of the children against violence and sexual abuse.

During today’s Pakigsayod, CWC Regional Director Renee Boy Binondo and Provincial Social Welfare Development Office (PSWDO) Focal Person on Child Protection, Lanny Guinit, revealed that sexual abuse is among the highest cases against children.

“Base sa atong mga nakahilap na mga issues and concerns na nigawas, una kaning mga violence against children, sexual abuse, naay report kita nga nakuha sa Regional Women and Children Protection Desk nga nagakataas ang atong kaso (Based on the issues and concerns that we gathered, violence against children and sexual abuse are among the primary increasing cases as reported by the Regional Women and Children Protection Desk),” said Binondo.

As well, Guinit said the PNP has also reported the same about such cases.

“Base sa atong pag-coordinate sa PNP, nagkataas na jud ang pagpang-abuso sa mga bata (Based on our coordination with the PNP, abuses against children really are increasing),” said Guinit.

She added that the cases of such in the first half of this year alone has surpassed the entirety of last year’s cases on children sexual abuse.

“Kung tanawun nato ang record from January to June na data, na surpass na ang data sa January to December 2019 sa kaso nga rape particularly sa kaso nga incest. Mao na ang tagaan jud nato ug pagtagad(If we look at the data on rape cases particularly incest, from January to June, it has surpassed the data from January to December in 2019. This is what we are really paying attention to),” she said.

Binondo connected the increase of these cases to the current state of wide unemployment as a contributing factor.

“Ang mga rason ni ini… mas ning samot siya karon kay pipila wala gyud nag trabaho, ang tanan naa sa balay. Usahay ang mga perpetrator, kaila ra, suod ra, diha lang sa balay (The reasons for this...it’s worse now because a lot of people don’t have jobs, they’re all in the house. Sometimes, the perpetrators are someone close, someone who’s just there in the house),” he said.

He added that with the help of social workers and the police, some factors have been identified.

“Kasagaran sa atong mga social workers ug police, naga ingon jud sila nga dunay similarities ang condition sa balay, economic condition, walay mga trabaho ang perpetuator, ikaduha kanang absence of one parent or wala gyud ang parent, so dunay mga in ana na mga factors nga atong nakita (Most of our social workers and police say that there are similarities between the cases; house conditions, economic condition, unemployed perpetrators, also absence of one parent or no parents at all. These are the factors that we see),” he added.

With this, Binondo said that for this year’s National Children’s Month and its activities are aimed towards protecting the children.

“Ang focus nato karon is upholding children’s rights amidst COVID19. Bisan nag pandemya ta, padayun kitang nag protekta sa ilang katungod (Our focus right now is upholding children’s rights amidst COVID19. Even though we are in a pandemic, we continue to protect them on their rights),” he said.

For this year, the activities and programs of CWC are held virtually and are also aimed to serve as outlets for children to develop their potential skills and keep their mental health.

Some of these include parental seminars and online art contests for children among others. (Jan Vincent Leuterio, PIA-XI)
