475K children to get measles vaccination starting October 26

DAVAO CITY, Oct. 22 (PIA) – About 475,029 children in Davao Region aged 9 months to 59 months are qualified to get their Measles Rubella shots starting October 26 until November 25, 202

In the media launch of the Chikiting Ligtas sa Dugang Nga Bakuna Batok Tipdas ug Rubella featured in the virtual presser One Davao, regional health officials highlighted the importance for children to get the free vaccination. A child has to receive two doses of measles immunization with vaccine to be considered a Fully Immunized Child.

DOH XI regional director Dr. Annabelle Yumang said the agency has devised two strategies to implement the measles vaccination activity.

“Sa fixed site mao kining mga health centers nato, pwede muadto ang mga parents and caregivers aron pabakunahan ang ilang mga anak. Naa pud kitay ginatawag nga Temporary Fixed Sites mao ang mga purok, gym, basketball courts ug open fields. ( Fixed sites are the health centers that we have where parents and caregivers can bring their child for vaccination. While another strategy is what we call Temporary Fixed sites where they can bring their child to identified purok, gym, basketball courts, and open fields.),” Yumang said.

Series of orientations were done for the health workers in the different provinces to be reminded on the protocols and guidelines that need to be practiced. Part of it is the strict compliance to the BIDA Solusyon to ensure safety of communities including the health workers themselves.

Yumang shared that integrated in the measles vaccination activity is the identification of BIDA Bastonerp/bastonera. These identified persons are expected to inform, remind, correct, and appreciate the people in the community on the strict practice of the minimum public health standards.

A child who exhibited fever, or cough does not automatically mean that they have afflicted the COVID 19 virus unless with an RT PCR swab test result. Thus, the DOH advised that kids with these symptoms will have to go first to the BHERT or Barangay Health Emergency Response Team for further observation before they can proceed to vaccination.

The DOH XI got the support of the provincial governors in Davao Region who all committed to support in the conduct of the measles vaccination activity. Also during the media launch, the official promotional video of the campaign was participated in by Davao del Norte Governor Edwin Jubajib, Davao del Sur Governor Douglas Cagas, Davao Oriental Governor Nelson Dayanghirang, and Davao de Oro Governor Tyron Uy.

The Davao City Health Office hopes to reach 100% of its target number of children to be vaccinated with Measles Rubella following a 102% coverage rate done by the office for the Polio Vaccination done in the recent months.

Davao Oriental Provincial Health Officer II Dr. Reden Bersaldo also assured the parents and caregivers that the provincial health team is all set to reach the target children, given that in the data of measles cases in Davao Region for the first 41 weeks of 2020, Davao Oriental recorded the highest number of cases with 263 and 3 deaths; followed by Davao City with 109 cases and 2 deaths.
