DILG, Marikina LGU sign agreement for Safe Philippines Command Center

PASIG CITY, Oct. 28 (PIA) -- The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), together with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Bureau of Jail Management and Facility (BJMP), and the City Government of Marikina recently signed the Deed of Usufruct for the establishment of the Safe Philippines National Command and Control Center (SafePh NCCC) in the city.

DILG Secretary Eduardo M. Año expressed his optimism the partnership will accelerate the capabilities of public safety institutions in terms of reducing criminality and improving the management of fire services, jail services, disaster risk reduction, and traffic management.

The DILG chief also said that the BFP will be able to scale up its rapid response in times of emergencies while BJMP will further improve its capability in jail decongestion and reformation efforts once the Safe Philippines facility in Marikina is completed.

According to the DILG, Safe Philippines is one of the priority projects of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to address problems and threats to public safety and security due to criminal acts, terrorist attacks, fire incidents, traffic congestion, and road accidents using modern ICT technologies.

Under the 20-year Usufruct agreement, the BFP will construct a BFP-National Capital Region (NCR) Regional Office, Marikina Central Fire Station, BFP Training Center, and Museum on a 13,067 square meters (sq.m.) while the BJMP will build a jail facility in 8,993 sq. m. lot areas in a parcel of land in Barangay Nangka owned by the Marikina local government unit (LGU).

Meanwhile, Sec. Año commended Marikina City Mayor Marcelino R. Teodoro for the city’s proactive efforts in breaking the chain of COVID transmission through strict implementation of quarantine and health protocols, scaled up contact tracing, and their very own testing laboratory which has led to one of the lowest COVID-19 transmissions in NCR.

The DILG chief also cited that Marikina emerged as the “gold standard” in the road clearing operations and the recent launchings of Disiplina Muna at BIDA ang May Disiplina campaigns.

The Deed of Usufruct was signed in a simple inaugural ceremony in Marikina City with DILG Secretary Año, Marikina City Mayor Marcelino R. Teodoro witnessed by DILG Undersecretary for Peace and Order Bernardo C. Florece, Marikina-LGU officials and personnel, as well as BFP and BJMP officials and personnel.

The SafePH NCCC aims to improve public security authorities' capacity to reduce crime and improve the management of fire services, prison services, disaster risk reduction, and road safety.

It would ensure public safety and security by providing the latest technologies to our police, public safety institutions, and emergency response units to enable them to more effectively predict, detect, prepare for, and respond quickly to incidents and to mitigate and respond to emergencies and disasters.
