BACOLOD CITY, Nov. 1 (PIA) — Deputy Chief Implementer against Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Secretary Vivencio "Vince" Dizon said health facilities constructed in Negros Occidental and Bacolod City are part of the readiness of the Local Government Units (LGUs) in their fight against the disease.
During the inauguration of a quarantine facility in Brgy. Alijis, Bacolod City, October 30, Dizon said ongoing construction of isolation centers and dormitories here is part of the LGUs' preparation so that if ever COVID-19 cases rise again, they will be better prepared than before.
He said that when COVID-19 cases were beginning to rise in Bacolod and Negros Occidental, former Congressman Abelardo “Albee” Benitez and Major General Major General (Retired) Mel Feliciano, chief implementer of the Visayas Inter-Agency Task Force, were talking almost every day for a week and were moving resources needed to assist the LGUs.
Dizon said they saw that as the beginning of the surge of COVID-19 cases.
He admitted it was a challenge at the start of the health dilemma as it was also difficult dealing with the swelling COVID-19 figures in Cebu.
“But if we all work, we can bring the cases down. We have seen that already,” he said referring to the downtrend in COVID-19 cases in Cebu and now in Bacolod City.
He warned, though, against complacency because the virus is still around.
“What happened in August in Negros Occidental and Bacolod, what happened in Cebu in June, can still happen again. That is just the reality,” he said.
Dizon recalled that during the peak of COVID-19 transmission in Manila, the highest reported cases in a day were 4,700 but are now down to less than 500.
According to him, the presence of the facilities with the hard work of people in the province and in the city and with the support of the government, COVID-19 can be effectively managed. (JSC/Lljr/PIA6 Negros Occidental)
