DOF warns public of online scams using names of public officials, business leaders

CALOOCAN CITY, Oct. 17 (PIA) -- The Department of Finance (DOF) has reiterated its warning against false information using the names of public officials and business leaders to scam the public into believing that they are endorsing financial products.

Advertisements using the names of Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III and former Senate President Manny Villar to promote cryptocurrency schemes have proliferated in social media and advertisements on news websites in recent weeks. Finance Assistant Secretary Antonio Lambino II’s name, meanwhile, was used in a so-called 'SIM raffle draw' of a 'Duterte Foundation.’ None of these schemes are legitimate.

The DOF urges the public to stay cautious and to not provide any personal information to these scammers. The DOF is working with the anti-cybercrime authorities and other relevant law enforcement agencies to track down and prosecute those behind such schemes. The DOF is also working with social media companies to track and take down fake posts.

The publis is advised that in case they receive any messages containing false information, to report and send the screenshot of the communication to the DOF Facebook Messenger account: m.me/DOFPH, or via email to doftaxreform@dof.gov.ph. (DOF/PIA-NCR)
