MAASIN CITY, Oct, 15 (PIA) -- In an approved ordinance numbered 2020-137, Maasin City prohibits any form of discrimination against medical and non-medical workers as frontliners including barangay officials and employees during this time of public health crisis.
Authored by Vice-Mayor Maloney Samaco, the ordinance prohibits any act that causes stigma, shame, humiliation and harassment against the persons mentioned.
It stated that whether the “use of social media (online posting), or verbal and written assault discriminating the frontliners including government officials and those who are suspects, probable and confirmed patients of infectious diseases shall be controlled in order not to add further confusion and chaos in the society.”
This covers all frontliners which include private and government doctors, nurses and health volunteers and workers, administrative staff, institutional workers (janitors), security personnel and barangay officials and employees who are in their official functions.
The Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines, among other law enforcers, emergency responders such as members of the Philippine Red Cross, Bureau of Fire Protection, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology including the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management officials and employees, BHERTS and the Philippine Coast Guard are also covered by the ordinance for their protection and safety from the public.
The form of discrimination also includes coercion, libel, slander, physical injury and dishonor of contractual obligations such as contract of lease or employment will be dealt accordingly.
The violators of the said ordinance will be penalized such as for first offense - P1,000; second offense will be P2,000 and imprisonment of 5-10 days; and P5,000 for the third and succeeding offenses with 11-20 days of imprisonment or upon the discretion of the court. (ldl/rgc/PIA-Southern Leyte)
