P270-M corn processing complex to rise in City of Ilagan

CITY OF ILAGAN, Isabela, Oct. 19 (PIA) - This Corn Capital of the Philippines will soon have its own P270 million corn processing facility.

This after officials of the Department of Agriculture (DA) - 2 and local officials of this capital city already started planning and conducted operationalization workshop of the said project.

City of Ilagan Mayor Josemarie L. Diaz, during the workshop held on October 15-16, 2020, said the effect of COVID-19 pandemic is prevalent in the region and the management and mitigation measures are conducted to prevent the spread of the disease but other important concerns should not be left behind.

“We have to attend to other equally important aspects of our governance; we have to give the same emphasis of response considering that they have to mutually co-exist with each other,” said Diaz.

He added that it is incumbent for the city government to respond to its need for economic upliftment to be able to provide the requirement for food and sustenance while ensuring the health and safety of all Ilagueños.

DA-2 Regional Executive Director Narciso Edillo, who attended the workshop via zoom, said that as of 2019 data, Region 2 produced 1.8 million metric tons of corn that contributed 20.9 percent of the national corn production.

He said that the soon-to-rise corn processing facility will be an icon of climate - resilient agricultural advancement to be equip with state-of-the-art facilities to boost production, agri-business opportunities geared towards inclusive growth and sustainable development of the corn industry.

The workshop was attended by Regional Technical Director for Research & Regulatory Rose Mary G. Aquino, Assistant Director for the Bureau of Soils and Water Management Dr. Junel D. Soriano, DA Consultant Valentino Perdido, CVRC Manager Engr. Rolando Pedro, City of Ilagan Mayor Josemarie Diaz and National Corn Program Director Lorenzo Caranguian via zoom.
