CEBU CITY, Oct. 16 (PIA) -- Among the first local government units that implemented strict community quarantine guidelines is the City of Tagbilaran in Bohol.
Despite the imposed limitation in terms of mobility and activities, the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) in Tagbilaran City successfully delivered services for the youth and the environment.
Rather than being discouraged from mounting activities and programs, Tagbilaran City’s SK Federation Chairman Raul Aparicio II said they thought of significant activities where minimum public health protocols would still be practiced.
“The thing is, we did not let the coronavirus become a hindrance to showcase what the youth in Tagbilaran City can do. Instead, we resorted to conducting activities in social media and web activities, an avenue where the youth are very active at,” said Aparicio.
Among the activities Aparicio and the City Youth Development Office spearheaded were free webinar sessions for mental health awareness, leadership skills training, e-sport tournaments, online essay writing, and poster making contests.
“There is no other way apart from thinking of alternative activities, so we can continue to do our part in ensuring Tagbilaran City to ‘Asenso Pa More’,” Aparicio added.
The SK Federation of the country’s "Most Business Friendly City" also played a major role in the city’s inking of partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in the launching of Opportunity 2.0.
The said program will be a collaboration between communities and organizations which aims to support the education, employment, and livelihood needs of the city’s out of school youth (OSY).
Apart from this major achievement, Aparicio also headed a series of coastal clean-up drives and mangrove planting activities in the city.
“We may be in the middle of a pandemic, but we want to ensure we can take part in various environmental protection activities. Besides, in the conduct of those activities, we ensured our participants observed physical distancing and were wearing appropriate personal protective equipment,” Aparicio said.
Aparicio also appealed to the youth to remain patient with the imposed restrictions and to continue supporting the government’s initiatives in countering COVID-19. (jkm/PIA7)
