Zambo City residents advised to stay on alert due to heavy rains

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Oct 20 (PIA) – The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) initially reported a total of 1,597 families affected of flash flood from different barangays in Zamboanga City due to heavy rains experienced in the past days.

Zamboanga City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (ZCDRRMO) rescue teams in collaboration with other agencies facilitated response in barangay Patalon due to rising waters caused by the collapse of the rip rap facility following continuous rains Sunday (October 18) morning. According to the ZCDRRMO, numerous houses were submerged that led to the temporary evacuation of families to the Patalon covered court.

The families were evacuated immediately especially in critical areas that were hit by the impact of heavy rain, which resulted to landslide and road erosion in several barangays. Family food packs and hygiene kits were initially distributed to the affected families, in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development IX (DSWD IX). Currently, the distribution of relief assistance is being done in the evacuation centers to the affected families of the affected barangays.

As of October 17, of the total affected, some 1,102 families are in Vitali, 12 in Mangusu, 312 in Talisayan (with 1,356 individuals), 126 in Patalon (567 individuals) and 45 in Labuan (218 individuals). Rojas said assessment and validation continues to determine the exact number of families affected and the additional assistance to be provided.

Meanwhile, the City Government continuously advised the 98 barangays and the public to remain alert and monitor their areas as we are still experiencing inclement weather in the city. People residing along river banks and low lying areas are advised to undertake pre-emptive evacuation to prevent loss of lives and properties amidst the unstable weather condition.
