DA apprises organic farmers on the amendment of RA 10068

QUEZON CITY, Nov. 4 (PIA) --  Department of Agriculture (DA) Undersecretary Cheryl Marie Caballero apprised all organic farmers of updates on the amendment of the Philippine Organic Agriculture Act of 2010 (RA 10068), which has a particular focus on Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS).

"Ang amendment na yan ay isinama po ang certification process because po, in the past, one of the complaints of our farmers and those who engaged in organic farming is the high cost of certification," said Caballero in the recent Dagyaw: Open Government Virtual Town Hall Meeting."

With its recognition by law, organic farmers -- including the small scale farmers as well as indigenous peoples -- will be able to get training and certification for their produce, without incurring heavy costs.

"The Department of Agriculture in cooperation with the legislative branch of the government is supporting this mechanism to make it easier for our organic farmers to be able to avail of assistance for organic certification," she added.

Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS) are locally focused quality assurance systems, certifying producers based on the active participation of stakeholders.                    (MCG/PIA-IDPD/DA)
