BFP Bicol capacitates media as emergency responders

Media practitioners in Albay undergo the Training on Basic First Aid on remote location, post-typhoon and workplace conducted by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Bicol on November 27, 2020 at the Pacific Mall.

LEGAZPI CITY, Nov 27 (PIA) – At least 25 media practitioners in Albay undergo the Training on Basic First Aid on remote location, post-typhoon and workplace conducted by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Bicol.

“With this first aid training, you will be equipped with practical skills suitable when you are on remote locations during typhoons and other emergencies, and during posts typhoons and even when just at your work stations,” BFP Region 5 Director SSupt Renato B. Capuz, DSC said during the training, Nov. 26 at the Pacific Mall, here.

With the media at the frontline during emergencies and disasters, Capuz said the basic first aid training is an advantage for them to be confident to perform ‘rapid reaction’ to those who are ill or injured.

"First aid is emergency care given immediately to an injured person, purposely to minimize injury and future disability and in serious cases, first aid may be necessary to keep the victim alive," Capuz said.

Handling patient casualty

At the said training, SFO1 Sanjoe Amaranto cited the AVPU scale as basis for the responder to measure and record a patient's level of consciousness. It is mostly used in emergency medicine protocols, and giving first aid.

“The AVPU scale stands for "alert, verbal, pain, unresponsive" which serves as the basis for the responder to consider in giving first aid. In case the patient is unresponsive there might be a need for a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR),” he said.

Moreover, the CPR must be done with caution especially with the Covid-19 pandemic and in consideration of other factors such as the age and condition of the patient.

“In times of emergencies, its better that we have done something than we’ve done nothing at all. With this training, you will have the right knowledge and the basic skills to respond to emergencies and even life-threatening situations,” FO1 Ryan Marabella said.

Marabella, together with FO3 Domingo Millena III demonstrated how to perform a CPR for adult and children, along with other techniques and first aid in cases of fire, choking, and other emergency situations.

Furthermore, Employees Compensation Commission Bicol Regional Head Yvette Casin- Bonavente presented the Employees' Compensation Program, a government program designed to provide compensation package to public and private employees or their dependents in the event of work-related sickness, injury or death.

"Do not remove stuck object from the patient's body since may cause severe bleeding," stressed FO1 Reina Donna Patriarca during the Basic First Aid Training as she demonstrated how to handle such situation.

First aid for shock and injuries

FO1 Reina Donna Patriarca also discussed and demonstrated to the media the first aid for body shock and injuries.

"Immediately apply pressure on open wounds to prevent bleeding. This can be done by using dressing and bandage, with the ends knotted near the wound for added pressure," she said.

Patriarca noted that in case of stuck objects such as knife and other sharp objects, do not attempt to move or remove the object from the patient's body. Instead, apply pressure and stabilize the object. Instead, transfer the patient carefully to the hospital.

“For small burns, go over running water but for bigger burns, cover it with dressing or bandage. For burned hands, put wet or damp cloth or fabric in between fingers to seperate burned fingers,” she said.

The Media Practitioners Basic First Aid Training on Remote Location, Post-Typhoon and Workplace is conducted by the BFP in cooperation with the Pacific Mall Legazpi, Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Employees Compensation Commission (ECC) and Philippines Integrated Fire Protection Organization (PIFPO).
