DILG lauds PNP, AFP for neutralizing NPAs involved in extortion, harassment in Luzon

CALOOCAN CITY, Dec. 21 (PIA) -- The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) congratulated the government security forces over the weekend for neutralizing five key leaders of the New People's Army (NPA) of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) who were reportedly involved in widespread harassment, extortion and terroristic acts.

The captured NPA rebels, the DILG said, were allegedly responsible for harassing, extorting, and terrorizing local government officials, businessmen, and ordinary citizens in the CALABARZON Region, some 40 kilometers south of Metro Manila.

DILG Secretary Eduardo M. Año said that among those neutralized, by the joint operations conducted by the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), were a Rebolusyonaryong Buwis sa Kaaway na Uri (RBKU) staff and an NPA regional intelligence officer who were actively generating funds for the communist terrorist group (CTG) through extortion and threats on unsuspecting victims.

“Mababawasan ang pananakot at pangingikil sa mga local officials at negosyante ngayong nalagasan na naman natin ang bilang ng mga kaaway ng bayan. Congratulations, PNP and AFP, on this significant accomplishment! Job well done!” Año said.

The DILG chief said that RBKU Unit is one of the “moneymakers” of the CPP-NPA-NDF, generating millions of funds through extortion and harassment to support the armed struggle in the mountains and to fund the propaganda, organizing, and recruitment activities of their front organizations in the urban areas.
