ILOCOS SUR, Dec. 24 (PIA) – Local government units (LGUs) in the province of Ilocos Sur have made it to the Top 20 ranking nationwide in the 2020 Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index (CMCI) of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
The towns of Bantay and Sto. Domingo ranked 5th and 13th, respectively in the 2020 Overall Most Competitive LGUs for Class 3 to 4 municipalities nationwide while Sta. Catalina town placed 18th for the Class 5 to 6 municipalities.
In the area of economic dynamism, Bantay town was awarded 4th place for the 3rd and 4th class municipalities.
For government efficiency, Bantay also attained 13th place for the 3rd and 4th class municipalities while the towns of San Esteban and Sta. Catalina achieved 9th and 18th places, respectively for the 5th and 6th class municipalities.
Adjudged as 16th place in the area of infrastructure is Bantay for the 3rd and 4th class municipalities while Sta. Catalina got 17th place for the 5th and 6th class municipalities in the same area.
Under the area of resilience, listed were Sto. Domingo (1st) and Sinait (20th) for 3rd and 4th class municipalities; and Nagbukel (8th), Sta. Catalina (18th) and San Esteban (20th) for the 5th and 6th class municipalities.
This year, 1,518 local government units participated in the CMCI – an annual ranking of Philippine cities and municipalities developed by the National Competitiveness Council through the Regional Competitiveness Committees with the assistance of the United States Agency for International Development.
Rankings of cities and municipalities are based on the sum of their scores on the four pillars namely: economic dynamism or activities that generate more jobs and businesses in the city/municipality; government efficiency, or the quality of service and reliability of the LGU; infrastructure, or the physical development of the city/municipality; and resiliency, or the capability of the city/municipality to pursue development even after a tragedy.
