Ilocos Sur town placed under MECQ

TAGUDIN, Ilocos Sur, Dec. 2 (PIA) – This municipality has reverted to modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) amid the sudden surge of confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases.

Governor Ryan Luis Singson issued Executive Order (EO) No. 46 series of 2020 placing the town under MECQ from November 30 to December 14 or unless sooner lifted or withdrawn.

“Twelve out of the 22 recorded cases in the province came from the municipality of Tagudin with just a period of five days not to mention that other active cases had recorded travels in the same municipality,” the EO reads.

It added, “The abrupt increase of positive cases from the municipality of Tagudin and the confirmation of local transmission alarmed the medical team of Ilocos Sur hence, recommended the reclassification of the status of the said local government unit from modified general community quarantine to MECQ in order to contain the virus.”

“Using various indicators like case doubling time of the disease and other health indicators, economic and social security, there is a need to reclassify the present status of the municipality of Tagudin in order to have more stringent quarantine restrictions,” it said further.

A curfew from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. was imposed in the municipality to limit the movement of people.

Earlier, the provincial government of Ilocos Sur also issued a public advisory stating that the Ilocos Sur District Hospital in Tagudin will be operating at a reduced capacity starting on November 27.

The Emergency Room shall be open 24/7 but all patients needing admission shall be referred to other government health facilities as deemed appropriate.

This is to allow thorough decontamination and testing of employees, the advisory said.

Meanwhile, Tagudin Mayor Roque Versosa Jr. mobilized so-called ”COVID busters” to disinfect their respective barangays every 3 p.m.

Mayor Verzosa also issued Executive Order No. 70  series of 2020 providing additional guidelines for the implementation of MECQ in the municipality.

Due to the surge of cases in Tagudin, Alilem Mayor Velmor Sumabat issued a public advisory on November 24 recommending the temporary travel restriction of his constituents to the Yellow Market, JTC Supermarket and Zeny’s Supermarket, all in Tagudin town.

Mayor Sumabat said that for the purpose of buying essential goods, all (except store owners) are prohibited to go to the above places from November 25 to December 9, 2020 or until the results of RT-PCR of all the close contacts of confirmed COVID-19 cases are released.

He advised residents to go to Bangar Market or Sudipen Market for the same purpose, with compliance to travel documents and protocols of La Union province.

To date, the province of Ilocos Sur has recorded a total of 126 confirmed COVID-19 cases in which 28 are active, 97 have recovered and one death. (JCR/AMB/PIA Ilocos Sur)
