Local nutrition workers complete e-learning course

SAN FERNANDO CITY, Dec. 31 (PIA) -- Eleven local nutrition workers completed the e-Learning course conducted by the National Nutrition Council (NNC-1) in the Ilocos and received their certificates via a virtual closing ceremony on Dec. 22.

 

The six-week course dubbed as: e-Learning Course on Nutrition in Emergencies and Information Management which started on Nov. 3 is aimed to enhance the competencies of local nutrition workers on the implementation of nutrition programs during emergencies as well as managing the data or information.

 

NNC-1 awarded the certificates to the graduates namely: Elma Irapta, Christina Caroy, Sunshine Tangoyab, Helbert Piol, Josephine Ruedas, and Rodolfo Ragadi from the Provincial Government of Ilocos Norte; Mercy Lenn Arzadon and Ma. Christine Dumlao from Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University; Kristine Joy Soriano from the Municipal Government of Calasiao; Gael Myca Abella from the Department of Science and Technology; and Jason Austria from the Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center.

 

“We congratulate our graduates for a job well done for further enhancing their knowledge, skills and capacities for them to be able to provide a more effective and efficient nutrition programs to their constituents during emergencies,” said NNC-1 officer-in-charge nutrition program coordinator Kendall Pilgrim Gatan.

 

According to Gatan, the course consists of several modules on disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) through a cluster approach, and the basic concepts of nutrition in emergencies and its importance including nutrition assessment and interventions.

 

Further, the other modules included the promotion of nutrition-related programs, risk communication, nutrition in the context of a pandemic and the minimum service package to ensure proper nutrition.

 

“Our participants also underwent planning sessions and learned how to prepare DRRM plans, monitor and evaluate the implementation of these, and at the same time apply what they have learned through simulation exercises, assessment and recalibration activities,” Gatan added.

 

Moreover, both online and offline learning sessions were conducted through lecture-discussions via videos, exercises, workshops, quizzes and assignments.

 

Participants were required to attend the three-hour twice a week sessions to finish the modules.

 

In addition, they were also provided with electronic copies and printed modules, equipment and supplies for the information management sessions, and data allowance from the start of classes until Dec. 10. 

 

Furthermore, the teachers, facilitators, and moderators are subject matter experts from the national and regional line agencies.

 

“We are very positive that our completers are now trained and are very ready to draft their own DRRM-Health-Nutrition in Emergencies Plan,” Gatan said.

 

Another batch of completers are expected to graduate in 2021, upon finalization and submission of the required outputs from them.

 

The e-learning program of NNC is being funded by the Department of Health - Emergency Management Bureau (DOH-HEMB) which started in 2018. (JCR/JPD/AHFF, PIA1)
