Young environmentalist bags first Youth Icon Award 2020

SAN FERNANDO CITY, Dec. 31 (PIA) -- A young environmentalist from this city bagged the first ever Youth Envi Icon Award 2020 conferred by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) Region 1.

 

The said award is aimed to recognize the youth’s contribution in environmental management and protection and highlights the efforts on green initiatives and contribution on environmental conservation.

 

Further, the search was also done to encourage and inspire young ecologists in the region.

 

Steven A. Angelo, who hails from Santiago Norte village, won the first place.  

 

Angelo is a third year Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science student of Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University – North La Union Campus (DMMMSU-NLUC) located in Bacnotan.

 

“Nanalo po siguro ako kasi naipakita ko ang pamumuno na kinakailangan na kung saan ang mga kabataan ngayon ay talagang naglilingkod para sa ikayayaman ng ating kalikasan,” said Angelo.

 

He added, “Ang pangarap ko lang naman ay maranasan ng mga susunod na henerasyon ang magandang kapaligiran na nararanasan natin ngayon, at nais ko na makita pa nila kung ano ang itsura ng mga puno, ano ang mayroon sa dagat at kung anong biyaya ang maidudulot nito sa kanila."

 

Angelo was nominated by his class adviser, the founders and officers of LINK, and his other professors. He was then endorsed by DENR-EMB to the national search in October, and was among the Top 6 Finalists. He also received the National Youth Icon Special Award on Solid Waste Management and IEC Campaign awarded virtually via Zoom App on Dec. 11. 

 

Moreover, he is an active member and officer of various environmental and governance institutions such as the Aksyon Kalikasan, Young EarthSavers' Society of DMMMSU-NLUC, Global Institute for Youth Development, the Lupon ng mga Indibidwal na Nangangalaga ng Kalikasan, and the San Fernando City Youth Development Council.

 

Other students that received awards were Clark Avien A. Bielza from Bauang and Jhunel L. Nevado from Bacnotan, who both received the National Youth Icon Special Award on Intensive Environmental Education Campaign.

 

The Youth Envi Icon Awards 2020 is open to all Filipino youth leaders ages 18-25 years old, and the nominee must have demonstrated leadership and has shown inspiring work on air and water quality management, solid waste, toxic and hazardous and chemical waste management, climate change and environmental education programs.

 

In addition, the nominee should be involved for two years and has continued inspiring people, and the initiatives, projects or programs executed have shown a positive impact in the community of which can be validated. (JCR/JPD/AHFF, PIA-1)
