'Ligtas Paskuhan' successful in Eastern Visayas, PRO8 reports

PALO, Leyte, Jan. 1 (PIA) -- The Oplan Ligtas Paskuhan 2020 in Eastern Visayas was successful as there were no untoward incidents reported as of 6 o’clock in the morning of January 1, 2021.

Police Lt. Col. Ma. Bella Rentuaya told the Philippine Information Agency that per the PRO8 Daily Monitoring Reports re Ligtas Paskuhan 2020, in the 15 operations conducted re Illegal Possesson/Use/Sale of Fire Crackers, only two were arrested, one by the Ormoc City Police Office and one by the Northern Samar PPO. Some 7,138 pieces of assorted firecrackers were confiscated with a total estimated value of P154,182 to wit, 2,881 by Leyte PPO; 1,736 by Tacloban City PO; 1,901 by Biliran PPO; 18 by Ormoc City PO and 600 by Northern Samar PPO.

On Illegal Discharge of Firearms, two were reported. The first incident was reported by the Samar PPO involving a civilian from Carayman, Calbayog City. Confiscated was one (1) unit of Cal. 9mm pistol with serial number 9111243; one (1) piece of magazine loaded with three (3) live ammunition for Cal. 9mm. Suspect is now under the custody of Calbayog CPS, SPPO.

The second incident was reported one by the Eastern Samar PPO involving a barangay Kagawad from Brgy. Camparit, Maydolong, Eastern Samar. Confiscated was one (1) unit of Cal. 45 pistol with serial number MO 5113873, SAM, Military Blue with FA ID #2219834. Suspect is now under the custody of Maydolong PS, E. Samar.

As of January 1, there are a total of four arrested suspects:  two for Illegal Discharge of Firearms (1 Maydolong, E. Samar, 1 SPPO); one for Violation of RA 7183 (1 OCPO); and one for Violation of Executive Order No. 56, An act banning the use, distribution, manufacture and sale of all types of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices (1 San Isidro, N. Samar).

In Eastern Visayas, 47 Local Government Units, particularly three cities and 44 municipalities passed Ordinances on Firecrackers Ban. A number of local government units in Eastern Visayas have also prohibited Christmas parties, reunions, and face-to-face caroling.

To recall, the PNP Region 8 earlier reported that a total of 1,643 police personnel in addition to force multipliers, were deployed for the “Oplan Ligtas Paskuhan 2020” in Eastern Visayas. 

Aside from ensuring the safety of churchgoers during the Simbang Gabi, they were also placed in various areas of convergence to ensure that minimum health protocols are followed in order to avoid the surge of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) cases during the holidays.

President Rodrigo Duterte had earlier urged the public to skip Christmas festivities this year and avoid holiday traditions for the safety of everyone amid the prevailing COVID-19 threat. (PIA8)
