QUEZON CITY, Jan. 31 (PIA) -- The Philippines is expected to receive the first batch of COVID-19 vaccines under the COVAX facility by the first quarter of February this year.
In a letter to the Department of Health, Aurélia Nguyen, Managing Director of Office of the COVAX Facility, said that the Philippines has been selected for participation in the first wave of Pfizer BNT162b2 vaccine distribution round, following review of the country readiness plan and WHO’s epidemiological assessment.
Around 117,000 doses of Pfizer BNT162b2 vaccine as part of the first wave are expected mid- February this year provided the country complies with the necessary indemnity and liability frameworks, including the required legislative framework and other documentations required by COVAX and Pfizer.
Around 5,500,800 - 9,290,400 indicative doses of the AstraZeneca AZD1222 vaccine is also expected to be distributed around mid or late February doses.
As early adopters of the COVAX facility, the Philippines is also encouraged to share with the other partners in the roll out of the vaccine.
Meanwhile, National Task Force Against COVID-19 Chief Implementer and Vaccine czar Secretary Carlito Galvez, Jr said that "this positive news is a testament that under the COVAX facility, it ensures equitable distributions of vaccines throughout the globe, which bodes well with the Duterte’s administration principle of “Walang maiiwan, walang iwanan” (No one will be left behind).
