TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Jan. 1 (PIA) - - The Philippine National Police (PNP) region 2 has recorded two firecracker-related injuries on New Year's eve, a 75 percent decrease as compared to the eight cases recorded last year.
Regional Director Brigadier General Crizaldo Nieves said the two injuries involved a six-year-old male in Santiago City whose left eye was hit by a “piccolo” firecracker and a 23-year-old male in Tumauini, Isabela who was injured when a “kwitis" exploded in his left hand.
Nieves said the downtrend of the injuries is a result of the intensified government’s campaign against illegal firecrackers.
"The new year's eve celebration in Cagayan Valley was generally peaceful, owing to PRO2’s massive information drive and enforcement of Executive Order 28 to ensure public safety," Nieves said.
Nieves further gave strict orders to the field commanders to sustain the implementation of the anti-illegal firecracker law to ensure no additional injuries.
“We are glad to report that firecracker-related injuries have dropped this year. This is a good start for us to keep our communities safe and peaceful throughout the year,” Nieves added.
