CEBU, Jan. 26 (PIA) -- The Province of Siquijor bagged the top awards in the Department of Health's (DOH's) Local Systems Awards 2020 in December last year and received a total of P1-M in cash prize for its exemplary practices in the health system.

Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu Province also received the top award in the Local Systems Awards 2020.

"I would like to thank DOH for recognizing the effort, support, and exemplary practices of our province who have contributed to the achievement of the health sector's goals and objectives," Siquijor Gov. Zaldy Villa said during the Network Briefing program hosted by Sec. Martin Andanar of the Presidential Communications Operations Office.

"Under my leadership, aside from the support and budget we gave to the different programs for health, we adopted and followed the medium terms strategic framework of the Fourmula One for Health which expands the four pillars of health reforms and highlights the greater purpose of performance accountability towards the Filipino people," he added.

The governor said they have implemented various programs such as provincial nutrition, population management, family planning, mental health advocacies, sexually transmitted infections-human immunodeficiency virus (STI-HIV), support of provincial blood programs, and other health programs.

In Siquijor province, every reported health issue that calls for the government's response, Villa said they immediately provide intervention on the factors that largely contribute to it.

This response, he added, is with the help of different medical employees from the barangay to the provincial level who have dedicated their time and effort to implement the different health programs in the province.

"We are even encouraged to continue our best practices and the health and safety of our Siquijodnons will always remain our priority," the governor said.

During the "Explain, Explain, Explain: Pagduaw sa Siquijor" information campaign on Jan. 20, 2021, Andanar and the different government officials who attended the townhall event lauded Siquijor's strict implementation of health protocols that helped maintain zero COVID-19 local transmission in the province.

The "Pagdu-aw” advocacy campaign aims to inform, educate, and communicate the Philippine National Vaccination Roadmap amid the proliferation of fake news regarding the vaccine cost, efficacy, and safety.

However, on Jan. 22, the Siquijor Provincial Task Force COVID-19 confirmed Thursday night that an 85-year-old woman with no travel history tested positive for SARS-COV-2, the virus which causes COVID-19.

Villa immediately signed and executed on Jan. 23 the Executive Order. 2021-ZSV-009, Series of 2021 : An Order Amending Executive Order No. 2021-ZSV-007 Enhancing the Implementation of Mandatory Precautionary Measures Against COVID-19 for the Period Covering Jan. 23, 2021 to Feb. 5, 2021 unless lifted, extended, repealed or replaced.

The Provincial Government of Siquijor has since reminded the Siquijodnons to continue practicing the minimum public health standards and implemented curfew and suspension of fiesta celebration, gatherings, classes, and cockfighting activities. (idc/PIA7)
