DOH-10: COVID-19 vaccines safe to use

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Feb. 5 (PIA) – “The vaccines would not reach this far if during the clinical trials they are not safe and have many dangers, according to  Dr. Ian Christian Gonzales, head of the Infectious Diseases Cluster of Department of Health (DOH)-10.

In an interview in a recently held "Talakayan sa PIA," Dr. Gonzales assured [the public] that the COVID-19 vaccines are safe.

Vaccine manufacturers use various technologies such as inactivated vaccine, viral vector vaccine, and mRNA vaccine.

The inactivated vaccine, Gonzales said, uses the older technology which contains an inactivated or dead virus that once injected into the body, the inactivated or dead virus will be recognized by the body then the immune system will produce an antibody that will serve as protection from the said virus.

The viral vector vaccine uses also a common technology in which a component of the COVID-19 virus is placed in another virus and the third type of vaccine, the mRNA or the messenger ribonucleic acid vaccine, uses relatively a new technology. "It has no virus content unlike the inactivated or viral vector," he explained.

Gonzales added that "every day the human cells are working and have their own functions. In every function it does the body produces mRNA. This particular vaccine has its own instruction for the immune cells to produce antigens. It triggers the immune cells to make antibodies to counter it."

He also said that side effects are common to any vaccine like fever, body malaise and body aches.

Gonzales clarified that whatever kind of vaccines will be used, all of them will trigger our immune system to make antibodies against the virus. Contrary to some conspiracy theories, the vaccines will not alter a person’s DNA once been vaccinated.

The DOH also guaranteed that the clinical trials which were monitored by the researchers and evaluated by the different food and drugs administration such as the United States, United Kingdom, and thr Philippines have proven that the vaccine is safe to use. (JAKAraña/PIA10)
