DAVAO ORIENTAL, Jan. 29 (PIA) – The Lumon Community Association in Davao Oriental continues to find ways to improve the lives of the people in the far flung communities amidst the pandemic.
During the Network Briefing News on January 29, 2021, Lumon Community Association President Rod John Pandili revealed the association’s contributions to the communities.
“Yung mga nasa bukid po natin binibigyan po natin sila ng mga agriculture products at mga equipments para makatulong sa kanilang pangkabuyahan (Those in the far-flung areas we give them agriculture products and equipment to help with their livelihood),” he said.
This assistance in agriculture is part of their flagship project called HALIK which also covers other aspects of the communities’ living such as Health, Livelihood, Indigenous culture, and Knowledge.
For health, the association helps set up sanitation systems and water tubs in the communities. As well, they conduct feeding programs for the malnourished children, and with the help of other government agencies, they conduct circumcision, dental, and medical services.
For livelihood, income-generating projects such as poultry, and production of banana food products are taught in the communities.
For indigenous culture, the association helps educate the Indigenous People (IP) of their rights.
For knowledge, they conduct literacy and numeracy programs as well as the provision of school supplies.
“Naniniwala po kami na yung ating mga mahihirap ay hindi dapat na hanggang mahirap lang sila, dapat sabay-sabay po tayong uma-angat sa buhay (We believe that the poor people should not just stay poor forever, we should all rise up at the same time),” Pandili said.
Kung mahirap ang buhay dito sa syudad, mas mahirap yung sitwasyon ng mga nan doon sa bukid especially yung mga conflict affected communities at yung mga Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (If life here in the city is difficult, then more so in the far-flung areas, especially the conflict affected communities and the GIDAs),” he added.
The Lumon Community Association, bearing the “We rise by lifting others” motto, is a Youth Community made up of “youth activists” that support the government. (Jan Vincent Leuterio/PIA-XI)
