MMDA chief joins unveiling of 'Kaunlaran' cutterhead--PH’s first tunnel boring machine

PASIG CITY, Feb. 6 (PIA) – Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairperson Benhur Abalos on Friday attended the unveiling of the cutter head of “Kaunlaran,” the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) for the country's first-ever underground railway system.

“Today’s unveiling ceremony for the TBM cutter head marks the beginning of a series of strategic actions for the realization of the Metro Manila subway project spearheaded by the Department of Transportation in partnership with the Japan international Cooperation Agency,” said Abalos, in his speech during the unveiling event also attended by Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade.

As one of the megacities in Asia, Metro Manila’s growing urban challenges namely the road and transport congestion, not to mention metro streets that are used beyond their capacity, utilizing underground space proves more viable, Abalos emphasized.

He said the MMDA strongly “believes that accelerating our mass transportation system with this unified subway station will steer us to the right course.”

“We are inspired by this vision and we are motivated to take part in this mission as well. Having this in the pipeline, we now look forward to kilometers of walkways with more safe spaces to enjoy the promise of a robust economy,” said the MMDA chief.

“Indeed, this is just the beginning of bolder ventures. As we face the headwinds of the future, we will rise above this current pandemic and stay on course towards progress,” he added. (PIA NCR)
