SOLECO extends cash aid to LGUs as pandemic assistance

MAASIN CITY, Feb. 4 (PIA) -- The local power distribution utility, Southern Leyte Electric Cooperative (SOLECO), extended financial support to the various local government units in their area coverage as their way of helping these local government units (LGUs) battle the Covid-19 pandemic.

Each one of the 18 municipalities, one city, and the provincial LGU received P40,000 each from SOLECO to help in continuing efforts at Covid response, for a total amount of P800,000.

The money was used to buy protective suits for medical frontliners, as well as other necessities needed by healthcare workers, Engr. Jonathan Empeno, SOLECO general manager, said in a recent Kapihan/media briefing interview, along with ranking staff personnel Chelito Ogdoc and Allan Ferrer.

In addition, the electric cooperative also stated in a calendar flyer that it “shares the burden of the LGUs in maintaining their respective isolation facilities for Covid-19 patients/suspected cases by subsidizing not more than 250 kwh of their electricity consumption for two (2) months.”

Meanwhile, in the month of December when Christmas was fast approaching, some 60 households spread around the province whose locations are very near electric posts yet did not enjoy the evening lights generated by SOLECO were installed free connections.

SOLECO itself made the initiative of going into these unlit houses so they can be lighted, in time for the holidays, said Chelito Ogdoc.

The lighting project that benefited poor houses was implemented under the “Liwanag sa Pasko, Handog sa SOLECO” program, Ogdoc added.  (ldl/mmp/PIA8-Southern Leyte)
