USAID’s 'Tibay ng Dibdib' story book receives award from DepEd

PASIG CITY, Feb. 7 (PIA) - The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through its TB Platforms Project, received an award for its “Tibay ng Dibdib” story book during the recently held “1st Kaagapay Award.”

The Department of Education (DepEd) conferred the “Kaagapay Award” to USAID’s TB Platforms for its partnership with DepEd’s Schools Division of Quezon City in adopting the “Tibay ng Dibdib” story book.

No less than DepEd Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones graced the event. During her keynote message she highlighted that DepEd’s Gawad Kaagapay honors and recognizes valuable contributions of public and private partners.

“In the name and on behalf of our 25 million learners, 847,000 teachers, greetings! The Department of Education though this Gawad Kaagapay Awards recognizes its stakeholders and supporters who continue to believe that their support will go a long way. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are happy that  around 24M worth of donations for the successful implementation of learning continuity materials, access to quality education through the provision of laptops, internet, data loads, online trainings, vitamins and even assistance to transport services have been extended by our more than 2000 partners – public and private institutions, civil service organizations and individuals who actively contributed to the needs of our DepEd offices and learners,” Briones said.

The education secretary also acknowledged the 2.9B special education fund provided by Quezon City Government led by Mayor Joy Belmonte.

“We commend the local government of Quezon City and the local council for this support. This fund will help our teachers and learners as they embrace the challenges of access to quality education during this pandemic,” she stressed.

USAID’s TB Platforms collaborated with DepEd-National Capital Region in October 2020 for the adoption of “Tibay ng Dibdib,” a true-to-life storybook with a coloring book version about the journey of two young sisters who survived Drug Resistant TB (DRTB) and Drug Susceptible TB (DSTB). With support from the local government unit, health facilities and family members, these children completed their TB treatment and got cured of the disease. They are also now enrolled in elementary grade.

DepEd-Quezon City, as a pilot demonstration site, in partnership with USAID’s TB Platforms produced a storytelling video for the online classes of Grades 3 and 4 in all public elementary schools in NCR. The project team also provided capacity building workshops for school administrators and faculty on TB 101 as well as technical support for the conduct of child-friendly TB screening and contact tracing as part of DepEd’s commitment to help promote TB education and help find TB patients and communities so the project can link them to health facilities for free TB medicines and proper treatment.

USAID’s TB Platforms works with the Quezon City Health Office, Metro Manila Center for Health Development and DepEd-NCR for the region wide roll out of “Tibay ng Dibdib” as the Philippine Government continues to ensure continuous provision of TB services amid COVID-19.
