TUGUEGARAO CITY, March 4 (PIA) -- The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in cases of problematic stereotyping and violence on Filipino women.
This was reported by Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) information officer Nevi Calma in a special online interview with PIA Region 2 for this year’s Women’s Month celebration.
According to Calma, such stereotypes on women that manifested during the pandemic include views that women should still carry the burden of domestic chores while working at home. At the start of the initial community quarantines, many offices and establishments nationwide implemented a work-from-home scheme to their workforce as a means to cope with the pandemic.
In addition, Calma reported cases of women losing their jobs due to some businesses shutting down, as well as instances of domestic violence, and online harassment of women that became more evident as more people frequented the internet during the lockdowns.
Calma also noted that some women involved in such cases usually have no capability or means to report their situation to authorities.
In response to these incidents particularly those involving violence, the PCW coordinated with the Inter-Agency Council on Violence Against Women to strengthen corresponding countermeasures. These include the establishment of hotlines, conduct of advocacy campaigns, and promotion of government services that cater to victims.
With this year’s Women’s Month Celebration, the PCW has prepared a series of webinars starting yesterday to promote the advocacy of upholding the rights and welfare of women. Some of these online forums will feature practical tips, discussions on mental health issues, as well as promotion of government programs available for women.
The PCW is the foremost policy-making and coordinating body for gender equality and women’s empowerment. The agency is in charge of promoting the socio-cultural, economic, political, and civil rights of all Filipino women.
