DOLE’s CAMP helps 39,480 COVID-affected Ilocos workers

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union, March 29 (PIA) - - The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in Region 1 through its COVID-19 Adjustment Measures Program (CAMP) had helped 39,480 affected workers in the Ilocos –Pangasinan provinces.

 

According to DOLE Regional Director Evelyn R. Ramos, a total of P197,781,480.00 CAMP assistance under the Bayanihan 1 and 2 was distributed to the COVID – affected workers in the region.

 

The recipients of the financial assistance were workers from the establishments that had closed or had adopted flexible work arrangements due to the pandemic.

 

“We are expecting our workers to be affected as the pandemic is currently hitting the global economy. However, the DOLE is quickly addressing the welfare of our affected workers,” said Director Ramos.

 

Based on the data generated by the DOLE-RO I from March 16 -25, 2021, a total of 306  establishments were temporarily closed and 29 others were permanently closed which resulted in the loss of jobs of 10,802 workers.

 

At least 225 establishments had to retrench 3,833 workers, while 587 adopted flexible work arrangements to save the employment of 35,149 workers.

 

“The CAMP financial assistance was intended as a temporary relief for our workers while quarantines are imposed,” she said.

 

The CAMP is a safety net program that provides one-time financial support to affected workers in the formal sector due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

The CAMP covers displaced workers or employees due to COVID-19 including probationary, project, seasonal, contractual, and casual employees in a private health institution, culture and arts, creative industries, including but not limited to, film and audiovisual workers, broadcast, construction, public transportation, trade and industries, cooperatives, and other sectors of the economy as may be identified by DOLE.

 

Through CAMP, affected workers, regardless of their employment status, will be receiving one-time financial assistance equivalent to P5,000.

 

The DOLE has recently adopted an online application system to fast-track the processing of CAMP applications.

 

Cherry Joy Paat Valentino, one of the recipients of the CAMP financial assistance from Candon City, Ilocos Sur, said that the cash assistance she received was a big help to her family as she used it to buy her young son’s needs. (JCR/FGL, PIA 1 with reports from DOLE Region 1)
