CALOOCAN CITY, March 12 (PIA) -- San Juan City has begun the vaccination of its medical workers from the San Jan Medical Center (SJMC) with vaccine made by AstraZeneca since Wednesday, March 11, at the FilOil Flying V Centre (San Juan Arena).

This is the second day of vaccination rollout to SJMC frontliners.

At least 230 doses of AstraZeneca were allocated to volunteer medical workers of the SJMC. So far, 143 signed up, 10 of them seniors.

First to get vaccinated with the Oxford-made vaccine in San Juan is Ret. Gen. Dr. Ramon Marin, Chief of Clinic at SJMC.

The 62-year old doctor said he opted for AstraZeneca because IATF recommended it for people over 60 years old.

“I encourage medical frontliners to get vaccinated because the vaccines are safe and it will give us added protection since we deal with patients every day. This also sets a good example and increase Filipinos' confidence that the vaccine is safe and effective,” Marin said.

“I am grateful to our medical frontliners from the San Juan Medical Center for taking the lead and setting good examples to our constituents. Indeed, we need to be protected in order to protect those around us,” said Mayor Francis Zamora in a call to the medical workers.

Mayor Francis is currently in quarantine at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center after testing positive for COVID-19 on March 1, 2021, said  Last March 6, 2021, 141 medical workers of SJMC were vaccinated with the Sinovac vaccines.

Forty (40) more healthcare workers from the said hospital will join their ranks after signing up to get the China-made vaccine.

At Cardinal Santos Medical Center, 797 health workers were vaccinated with Sinovac, 526 others received AstraZeneca. Thursday also marked the last day of inoculation at CSMC.

St. Martin de Porres Charity Hospital, also in San Juan City, is next in line to be inoculated with CoronaVac by SinoVac.

Healthcare workers who received the SinoVac vaccine will get their second dose 28 days after their first jab and those who received the AstraZeneca vaccine will get it after six weeks.

Meanwhile, Vice Mayor Warren Villa said that the LGU is happy with the turnout of frontliners who wished to be vaccinated.

He also talked about the rising cases in Metro Manila and San Juan’s initiatives to minimize the infection.

“We already imposed new curfew hours. Exercising and non-contact sports are also temporarily prohibited at Pinaglabanan Shrine.

Mass gatherings are also prohibited and more police officers are deployed to ensure that health protocols are followed.

Extensive mass testing is also continuously done to contain our cases,” he said.

San Juan continues to encourage its residents to get vaccinated. As of March 10, total registrants for the vaccination program in the city numbered 32,915 or 38.54% of the target population of 85,400 or 70% of the target population to achieve herd immunity. Medical frontliners account 3,456 of the registrants while the general population number 29,459. As of March 10, 2021, 196 active cases were recorded in San Juan City with 3,794 recoveries.
