Sec. Andanar gives update on Media Workers' Welfare Act

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, March 17 (PIA) – Cagayan media workers have high hopes for their security, protection, upliftment of their economic welfare, and enhancement of their skills after the approval of the Media Workers' Welfare Act.

Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Martin Andanar said in a press conference with Cagayan-based media in Tuguegarao City that the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) has been pushing for the Bill to address the vulnerabilities of media workers by proving them security and protection, among others.

According to Andanar, the Bill, which already passed the Lower House and is now for review in the Senate, is the fulfilment of President Rodrigo Duerte’s commitment to ensure that media workers in the country are secured and protected.

Cayetano Tuddao, stringer writer of GMA and manager of Clearview Cable Station said that this is good news on the part of media practitioners like him considering the nature and risks of their job, and adding the fact that only few media entities or managers provide skills enhancement to their people.

PCOO Sec. Martin Andanar assures the government's support to media workers during his "Meet the Press" activity in Tuguegarao City.

“For more than two decades in the local media, we never availed of skills enhancement trainings from the government. Our security is always at stake,” Tuddao said after Andanar assured that the bill will be passed into a law before the term of the President ends.

For the past years, other countries viewed the Philippines as the worst and deadliest place for media workers. The bill seeks to break that global concept.

Meanwhile, on the part of the government media, Andanar stressed the need for the government to keep up with new technologies in the market in order for its media to remain a relevant source of information.

“The most effective media institution is the one that can deliver accurate and timely information, and that is what we are aiming for”, he said while assuring to modernize government stations. (MDCT/JCK/GVB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
