'True' assessment needed in student performance in distance learning -Gatchalian

Senate Committee on Basic Education, Arts and Culture Chairperson Senator Win Gatchalian

CALOOCAN CITY, March 6 (PIA) -- Senator Win Gatchalian today said students' performance in online classes and other modalities should come under a "true" assessment to check whether they have learned enough under the current distance learning program.

During the Laging Handa public briefing hosted by the Presidential Communications Operations Office, the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, Arts and Culture said the Department of Education (DepEd) should also consider re-evaluating their metrics not only to be sure, but to be able to identify the areas where students struggle so they could be targeted for remedial programs.

The senator was reacting to a DepEd report presented to the Senate on Wednesday on the performance of Grades 1 to 12 students showing more than 14.5 million learners obtained passing marks, while more than 126,000 got failing grades. The report said about 99 percent of students nationwide obtained passing grades in the first quarter of the school year amid the distance learning system.

Nakakagulat po talaga," he explained.

Gatchalain emphasized that assessment tools are very important because it has always been the government's goal to make sure that students are learning and not regressing under the distance learning system.
