CALOOCAN CITY, March 14 (PIA) -- The University of the Philippines (UP) College of Law has welcomed Professor Edgardo Carlo L. Vistan II as its new Dean, following a thorough selection process and upon his appointment by the Board of Regents to lead the country’s premier law school.

In a recently held meeting, the Board of Regents—the highest governing body in the UP System—announced Vistan as the new Dean topping the shortlisted nominees for the College deanship.

Aside from a careful assessment of the nominees’ qualifications, the University Search Committee for the Deanship of the UP College of Law organized several public and sectoral forums.  Copies of the nomination letters, academic and teaching background of the candidates, along with their mission and vision statements, were made available to the public to ensure inclusivity and transparency in the selection process.

The nominees were evaluated based on their commitment to academic freedom and values and ideals of the University, distinction or outstanding academic credentials in their field of expertise aligned with the College of Law’s disciplines, leadership qualities and administrative or managerial capabilities, as well as consideration of resource generation, among others.

In his vision and mission statement, Vistan recognized the importance of assigning value to what the College has already achieved while constantly adapting to the academic sphere’s inevitable changes. “A mindset of building on the gains of the past years while adjusting to the challenging demands of the present and future is what I commit to bring to the Office of the Dean of the UP College of Law,” Vistan stated in his preliminary remarks.

Vistan obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology in UP, where he graduated cum laude in 1998.  He then took up his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree in the same university, where he once again graduated cum laude as class valedictorian in 2003.  Vistan obtained his Master of Laws degree from Yale Law School in 2017.  He is also a J.S.D. candidate at Yale.  Among his other roles in the College, Vistan is the Director of the UP Office of Legal Aid (UP OLA).

Dean Vistan joined the UP Law faculty in January 2015 and is one of the youngest Dean ever appointed in the history of the College.  He is the 16th Dean of the College and will serve from February 26, 2021 up to 2024.
