1,511 cops to ensure peaceful Labor Day celebration

ILOILO CITY, April 27 (PIA) - - The Police Regional Office (PRO) 6 will deploy a total of 1,511 personnel to ensure peaceful celebration of Labor Day on Saturday, May 1, in Western Visayas.

These personnel will perform tasks to intensify police operations and the implementation of well-planned and coordinated security measures particularly in areas where demonstrations, rallies, mass and protest actions are expected to be conducted, said a PRO 6 press report.

Recently, a Security Plan for Labor Day Celebration for implementation in the whole region was signed by PRO6 Director Police Brigadier General Rolando F. Miranda.

According to the PRO 6 report, although Western Visayas is now under the Modified General Community Quarantine status, the Labor Day celebration may serve as an avenue for the moderate and radical groups to air their demands and grievances through the usual conduct of mass actions highlighting pressing issues and concerns related to labor and COVID-19 crisis.

“Our presence is to maintain peace and order,” said Miranda.

During the actual day of deployment, PRO 6 Civil Disturbance Management teams will be on standby especially in urban centers where rallies or critical scenarios are expected while its intelligence units will also intensify their monitoring of any plans and activities related to the celebration.

Round the clock random checkpoints will also be deployed to ensure safety in coordination with other concerned agencies/offices.

The security of police stations will be further strengthened and target hardening measures on vital installations, places of convergence, economic key points will also be done.

This is in anticipation of any contingency wherein the communist terrorist group might initiate parallel actions such as terror attacks or tactical offensives toward soft targets and sabotage operations to discredit the government efforts in addressing the effect of COVID-19 crisis.

Police units were also reminded to strictly implement the health protocols considering the OCVID-19 threat.

“We hope that the community and even the progressive groups will support the PNP in promoting a peaceful celebration of Labor Day,” said Miranda as PRO 6, just like last year, aims to have a peaceful and orderly celebration of the Labor Day where most of the people observed the health protocols and set aside their grievances to help those who are in need.
