CALOOCAN CITY, Apr. 6 (PIA) -- The Department of Health (DOH), together with the local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila, will set up a triage system for COVID-19 cases starting this week.
“Under this triage system, the local health workers will assess whether the patient’s case is recommended for admission to the hospital or a quarantine facility,” DOH USec. Vergeire said in DOH Media Forum on Monday, April 5.
This triage is where a midway was put up for patients to be assessed first by local health workers to prevent the congestion in hospitals following the increase in COVID-19 cases.
“This is a layer that we are trying to include into the structure. We will cut the structure of people going straight to the hospital from their home or the LGU,” Vergeire said.
She added that the triage system will be linked to the One Hospital Command and to the ambulances from the local government that will be provided as transportation for patients directed to the hospitals.
“It’s going to be functional this week, so that the public will know where to go first when they have COVID-19 symptoms,” Vergeire said.
The DOH will start to extract asymptomatic and mild COVID-19 patients from the hospitals and bring them to the designated facilities of the local government.
The health department was able to identify areas with additional 257 beds for the isolation and they have continued to set up tents to accommodate more patients in various hospitals.“All of these efforts we’ll be doing and facilitating this week to alleviate the congestion in our hospitals right now,” Vergeire said.
